Eat!! — that was the spirit.
I skipped the shrimp tempura bowl and headed for a ramen shop instead.
“Kagoshima ramen with extra chashu + rice? Lunch was 7 hours ago, I can totally do this,” I told myself.
Yeah, well… the moment it arrived, I froze.
The bowl looked like it wanted to fight me. And honestly, it almost won.
I somehow finished it, but halfway through it stopped being a meal and became a food battle.
Cursing my own foolishness, I crawled back to the hotel.
And then—
a sign: Night-Cry Curry (yes, that’s really what it’s called).
I was full. I gain weight easily. Normally there’s no way I would eat something like that…
But I wanted to experience “night-cry curry” so badly that the next thing I knew, I was standing in front of it.
Just half a ladle of rice, some curry on top. Spicy, rich, ridiculously good.
Honestly, maybe I should’ve held back on the ramen and saved space for this.
…Okay, that sounded arrogant. Sorry. It was genuinely delicious.
Tomorrow’s ferry was early, so I showered, flopped into bed, tried to watch YouTube, and knocked out immediately.
The next morning
Up at 6:30, packed in 30 minutes, headed to the port.
Heavy luggage makes me nervous about timing, so of course I arrived with almost an hour to spare.
Dropped my bags, grabbed breakfast and water, bought a ticket, and boarded the ferry.
Inside were sofas and carpet rooms, no assigned seats.
I left my bags in the carpet room, wandered out to the deck, and circled around looking for a spot — no benches, so I leaned near the stairs and just spaced out for a while.
Still thirty minutes until departure. Sleepiness won, so I lay down and scrolled my phone.
And then we set off.
I took photos of Ibusuki’s sand baths from afar, then Cape Sata.
Four hours later — hello, Tanegashima.
Not much to say about the ferry, so yes, we’re already here.
Rental car & first destination
My car was reserved for 1 PM, so I waited at the port, then drove off.
Two destinations: Chikura-no-Iwaya (sea cave) and the Space Center.
The car had over 100,000 km and the GPS was ancient, so I just drove without navigation, counting on road signs.
On the way, mangroves appeared — couldn’t resist stopping.
Crabs strolling along the mud, a kind of quiet only islands have…
But I was still in a hurry, so back on the road.
No one on the roads, easy drive, signs everywhere — arrived without trouble.
I got out and… the key wouldn’t lock. Battery dead?
No manual key lock either.
But this is Japan, and an island, and no one was around.
So yeah — I left it unlocked and prayed.
Chikura-no-Iwaya
The tide was high so I couldn’t enter, but the light inside the cave was beautiful.
Three cave mouths breathing waves in and out.
Even completely alone, the rhythm continued — strangely sacred in a place like this.
I got too close, nearly flooded myself, panicked dramatically, escaped safely.
Honestly?
The sky impressed me even more than the cave.
Clouds, no mountains blocking the horizon, that pure island sky — maybe the best sky I’ve ever seen.
Sea and sky — this island hits hard.
Space Center
On the way, another mangrove sign — another detour.
Brackish water, trees standing in it, oily sheen on the surface — nature doing weird beautiful things.
Like plants sweating.
Then the Space Center. Rocket statue, more people than at the cave, but hey — if my unlocked car survived once, it’ll survive again.
Free entry, great exhibitions — engineering, history, philosophy, interactive stuff.
I especially liked the rocket diorama and the message board for space dreams.
You’d expect this in Tokyo, not here — but that contrast makes it better.
I’m a humanities brain, yet somehow I love this stuff.
Strange how life works.
Bought souvenirs, took photos, left.
Evening drift
Took a detour to enjoy the coastline. Bought garlic rusk.
Stared at the sky over the rocks — ocean sound + giant sky = addictive.
Had to return the car by 18:00, dropped luggage at the inn, made it back to the rental place by 17:45.
Could’ve squeezed in one more stop… but oh well.
Walked ~2 km back to the inn.
Stopped by a drugstore for shampoo, dropped it off, then walked another ~2 km to dinner.
Rural stamina win — walking doesn’t feel like suffering here.
The izakaya was charming — fair prices, cozy interior.
I ate grilled kibinago, fried chicken, fish fry, salted broccoli — perfect.
Chatted with the lady running the place — island dialects are amazing.
“Look at it” in Tanegashima dialect becomes “miran.”
Loved that.
Went back, showered, slept early — diving tomorrow.
Tanegashima — or rather, the people I met here — felt genuinely warm.
I want to come back someday.
Diving stories next time.
See you!
🇫🇷
Manger !!
Il voulait me battre.
Salon, salle tatami, places libres.
Je me suis trop approché, vague, panique, fuite héroïquement ridicule.
Mer + ciel = Tanegashima me prend au cœur.
Centre spatial
Izakaya sympa, prix justes, ambiance douce.
J’y reviendrai.
Plongée au prochain épisode.
À bientôt.
